The Bombay High Court dismissed a CBI appeal against the documentary’s streaming on Thursday, allowing Netflix to air the series on the streaming service. Indrani Mukerjea is on trial for the alleged death of her daughter Sheena Bora.
Originally slated to debut on Netflix on February 23, the documentary series titled ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: The Buried Truth’ explores the disappearance of 25-year-old Bora.
Indrani Mukerjea’s Court Decision:
After seeing the series, a division bench made up of justices Revati Mohite Dere and Manjusha Despande came to the conclusion that it reflects the prosecution’s position rather than prejudice it. The Netflix docuseries, which centers on Indrani Mukerjea, a key suspect in the Sheena Bora murder investigation, was originally scheduled to debut on February 23.
Indrani Mukerjea’s Case:
Indrani Mukerjea, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamwar Rai are accused by the prosecution of strangling Indrani’s daughter Sheena Bora from a prior relationship in a vehicle on April 24, 2012, in Mumbai. The next day, they disposed of her body in a nearby forest in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, her body was set ablaze in a jungle.
In 2015, the murder was made public as Rai disclosed the homicide after being detained in a different case. Due to their claimed involvement in the murder, Khanna and Indrani were placed under arrest. When the CBI took over the investigation, Indrani’s ex-husband Peter Mukerjea was later taken into custody on suspicion of participating in the plot that Indrani had devised.
When Indrani’s bail was finally granted by the Supreme Court in May 2022, the High Court had refused it in November 2021.
CBI Investigation:
According to the CBI, the documentary may change public opinion, which would then influence judges. The court did observe that it had also seen the series and that it had believed the CBI would not pursue its demand in opposition to the show.
In a previous instance, Additional Solicitor General Devang Vyas expressed reservations with the sequence of interviews that included both suspects and certain witnesses while representing the CBI. The delayed release was due to a request from the High Court on February 22 for Netflix to show the series to attorneys and justices.
