Jaiswal started the game more cautiously than he had in the first Test, biding his time and waiting for bad balls with his opening partner and captain Rohit Sharma at the other end. Rohit won the toss and elected to bat first. He ended up taking spinner Shoaib Bashir’s first Test wicket before Shubman Gill switched to Jaiswal and continued his vigilant approach. Ultimately, however, when he was destroyed by the genius of James Anderson, the former changed course and set himself up for a major victory.
England then fell behind
by 90 runs between Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer, the duo holding India to lunch and then remaining steady for much of the first half of the second session. However, Iyer failed to turn things around and ended up losing to Tom Hartley, who scored 27 of his 59 points.
This left debutant Rajat Patidar in a difficult position. He was dismissed for 32 runs by Rehan Ahmed in the last edition.

Rohit had earlier confirmed in the match that Patidar would make his debut as a replacement for the injured KL Rahul. Also, India decided to field Kuldeep Yadav instead of selecting all-rounder Washington Sundar in place of Ravindra Jadeja, while pacer Mohammad Siraj was rested and Mukesh Kumar took his place. Patidar earned his first Test cap just minutes before the toss, ending speculation over whether he or Sarfaraz Khan would be allowed to play.
