The movie depicts the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights campaigner from Amritsar, Punjab. During a turbulent time defined by terrorism, Khalra and many other Sikhs witnessed the grim reality of police abuse. The Punjab Police, given enormous extrajudicial powers by the Centre government under Indira Gandhi, could arrest people without a warrant and were even involved in the death of unarmed civilians.

The biopic Jaswant Singh Khalra, starring Arjun Rampal and Diljit Dosanjh has sparked controversy after the Central Board of Film Certification granted it an A certificate and requested 21 cuts including a title change. The film body noted that some dialogues in the film were “provocative and communal in nature.” Following this, RSVP Films led by producer Ronnie Screwvala filed a challenge to the cuts with the Bombay High Court.
